Genius Hour 1.1

First Week of Taxidermy
     - This week I looked through our freezer to see what kind of fun things we had in there for me to work on. Under an endless supply of deer capes I came across a Bobwhite Quail that my uncle originally gave to my dad to practice on. (So if I really screw up I don't really have to worry too much) :)

   - After I chose what I was going to do I went online and found a few poses and habitats that I thought were cool and saved them to my phone.


  - I think that for the most part I will be able to stick to my planning sheet. Some weeks I will be much more productive than others due to my schedule. I don't think that it will be too hard to catch up. I will be doing all of the work at my house so I can make time whenever I can to finish this project.

    I like what you are doing. I can easily understand what is going on and what your GH is. How confident are you in trying this for a first time? How many capes do you think you'll have to go through to perfect your project?

      Thanks Logan, I hope to complete my project without destroying any materials as they can be hard to come by. I am pretty confident however, because I know that I have great resources and ample time to master this skill to the best of my ability.

    I’m not going to say I wasn’t concerned with your opening statement “this week I looked through our freezer to see what fun things we had in there for me to work on.” That being said I’m excited to see where you take this project and the final results! I wish you all the luck!

    Not that I have any experience, but taxidermy seems like a very difficult skill to possess so it’s impressive that you’re tackling it and I can already imagine that you’ll do a great job. I look forward to seeing your progress and all you’ll accomplish with your project.

Welcome back, taxidermy has really taken off this week. For a while I have been doing mostly busy work preparing for that actual mounting of the quail. I am on track with my planning and will have this all mounted with plenty of time to create a habitat or a creative way to display it. So I started off by fleshing and skinning the quail. The ones that we had thawed out were very beat up, they had holes from dog bites and broken bones from the transporting process.  Skinning these birds was much more difficult than I anticipated, the skin is very, very thin and I would be lying if I said I didn't cut a few holes. One of the wings was completely broken so that made the process of removing the skin off of the wings without further damage quite difficult. Photography 2.6

For this week, I am going to take what I have learned so far in my photography project and outline the main mistakes I have made, as well as the things you should never do while taking pictures. Some of the tips I have either read online or learned from my friends who are really good at photography. Five Things A Photographer Should Never Do Never use the flash when taking indoor pictures- I have done this and did not realize that it is looked down upon in the photography world....oops  Never shoot into direct sunlight- Always results in blotches like these. Never cut people off at the joints- I do not usually take pictures of people but this is a big one when it comes to portraits. ex: she is cut off at the ankles Never take pictures if you are shaking really bad- A tripod is always a good idea if you struggle to hold steady.
